Matter Of Fact!

There are fewer than 3 500 tigers left in the wild, compared to 7 000 a decade ago and 40 000 in the 1950s. There are more tigers in captivity in Texas than in the wild throuhout Asia.

There are currently 6 subspecies of tigers. The different subspecies are found in areas of Asia, India and Russia. The largest subspecies is found in snowy areas of Russia. The smallest and darkest subspecies is found farther south, in the jungles of Indonesia. Tigresses (females) are always smaller than males.

SIBERIAN OR AMUR TIGER - the largest of the tiger subspecies, males can be as long as a station wagon. These tigers also have the palest orange coat and the fewest stripes.

BENGAL OR INDIAN TIGER - This is the most common subspecies of tiger.

INDOCHINESE TIGER - These tigers are about 20% smaller and are darker than Bengal tigers.

MALAYAN TIGER - This subspecies was proved to be a "true subspecies", living in Thailand and Malaysia in 2004. A group from the U.S. National Cancer Institute, the Laboratory of Genomic Diversity, studied the tiger and discovered the new classification. The Malayan tiger is one of the smallest subspecies of tigers, along with the Sumatran tiger.

SOUTH CHINA TIGER - These tigers are slightly smaller than the Indochinese subspecies. In the 1950s the Chinese government ordered that these tigers be destroyed because they were viewed as pests. Today, there are less than 30 South China tigers left in the wild. Thankfully, the Chinese have taken steps toward a plan to protect the remaining South China tigers.

SUMATRAN TIGER - Even though the Sumatran is one of the smallest tiger subspecies, it still is a pretty big cat and is the length of a school cafeteria table!

Creature Of The Month-The Pinta Island Tortoise

The Pinta Island Tortoise has been labeled the rarest creature in the world!! In fact his hard shelled turtle is more then just rare, he is unique. Being the only one remaining alive, he remains the sole survivor of the even diminishing species of Great Galapagos tortoises.

The only one Pinta Island tortoise (Geochelone elephantopus abingdoni), is a male known by his keepers as Lonesome George. George is estimated to be 60–90 years of age, and is in good health. And when he dies the Pinta tortoises will be extinct:(

Researchers are so desperate to find a female of the species that they are offering $10,000 to anyone who comes forward to offer a chance at saving the Pinta Island tortoise.

Green Recipe : Aromatherapy Air Freshener

Possibly the easiest way to make your own aromatherapy air freshener is to use some of your garden flowers and garden herbs. If you already grow lavender, rose or rosemary, or other strongly scented plants, it is very easy to create your own pot-pourris for home use.
Lavender can be dried, put into a cloth bag and then hung. Stir the contents to release the fragrance.

Just dry selected leaves and flowers in large paper bags. Shake and turn them frequently until dried.
Place them in shallow basketwork bowls for gentle room freshening and scenting.

Gadget Of The Month: Poor Little Goldfish Sink

This particular gadget illustrates how important it is to conserve water. When you are using this sink to wash your hands, the fish loses its real estate if you take too much time.
Yes, the water level in the fish bowl will actually go down if you are scrubbing your hands too long. In case you are wondering, there are safety features so the fish won’t have all of its precious water taken away.
Just to let you know, you are not using the same water that a fish inhabiting. It’s just made to appear that way. The truth is the fish water drains underneath the sink, and then will return to normal.

The Reasons To Recycle Paper !!

Did you know that for every ton of paper that is recycled:

  • Seventeen pine trees are saved. Trees sequester carbon.

  • Three square meters of landfill space is saved. This reduces cost to municipalities because transport costs are reduced. This also frees up space at landfill sites.

  • A substantial amount of energy is saved. Energy saved from paper recycling per annum is enough to provide electricity to 512 homes for a year.

  • Forty percent less energy is requied to manufacture paper from recovered paper. Recycled fibre reduces air emissions in paper making by 70%

  • THERE is a reduction of coal-based emissions of one ton of carbon dioxide.

  • There is a reduction of electricty-based emissions of 1,8 tons of carbon dioxide.

So do your part and recycle, the power is in your hands :)

Creature Of The Month- The Blue Crane

The Blue Crane is one of the smallest of the 15 crane species worldwide the Blue Crane is the national bird of South Africa. It’s endemic to southern Africa, with more than 99% of the population occurring within South Africa (a small disjunct breeding population of approximately 60 individuals exists in northern Namibia, in and around Etosha Pan).

Of the 15 species of crane, the Blue Crane has the most restricted distribution of all. While it remains common in parts of its historic range, and between 10,000 and 20,000 birds remain, it began a sudden population decline from around 1980 and is now classified as critically endangered.

In the last two decades, the Blue Crane has largely disappeared from the Eastern Cape, Lesotho, and Swaziland. The population in the northern Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and North West Province has declined by up to 90%. The majority of the remaining population is in eastern and southern South Africa, with a small and separate population in the Etosha Pan of northern Namibia. Occasionally, isolated breeding pairs are found in five neighboring countries. The primary causes of the sudden decline of the Blue Crane are human population growth, the conversion of grasslands into commercial tree plantations, and poisoning: deliberate (to protect crops) or accidental (baits intended for other species, and as a side-effect of crop dusting.

Green Recipe : Everyday multi-surface cleaner

Take an empty washing-up liquid bottle or similar and fill it about 10th full of washing-up liquid detergent, preferably an environmentally friendly one such as Ecover. Add a similar amount of white distilled vinegar. Fill up the rest of the bottle with plain water. Use this squirted onto a damp cloth for wiping down surfaces. Dilute further if it seems too foamy.

This cuts through grease very well and deodorises too. I've used it on sealed wood - such as kitchen cupboard doors and the kitchen table with no problems at all. I'm not sure I'd use it on the best polished mahogany table though!

Chew On This!

If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep you are richer than 75 percent fo this world.

If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace....You are among the top 8 percent of the worlds wealth.

If you woke up this morning with more health than illness....you are more blessed than the million who will not survive this week.

If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the lonellness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation...You are ahead of 500 million people in the world.

If you can attend a religious meeting without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death...You are more blessed than three billion people in the world.
If your parents are still alive and still married you are very rare, even in the United States. If you hold up your head with a smile on your face and are truley thankful...You are blessed because the majority can, but most do not.

If you can read this message, you just received a double blessing in that someone was thinking of you...You are more blessed than over two billion people in the world that cannot read at all.

Have a good day and count your blessings!!

Gadget Of The Month: Apple iPad

And so, the Apple iPad has arrived. Probably the most hyped gadget since the iPhone.
The iPad is one of the hottest gadgets of 2010.
The best feature of the iPad is the Killer apps available. The iPad sports a 1024x768, 9.7-inch diagonal screen. This is roughly the size of a PC netbook screen, but dwarves the wee iPhone screen, which is 480x320 and 3.5 diagonal inches.

There's a shrew in my pool !!

I found this shrew chilling in our pool, its quite a adapted swimmer to my surpise :)

What is a shrew?

A shrew is a small animal like a mouse with a long nose or a bad-tempered unpleasant woman lol

Shrews in general vary in size between 10 to 30 cms. They feed on insects but are also known to feed on seeds and shoots.
There are more than 200 known species of shrews which are distributed around the world; except Australia and New Zealand, the West Indies, and most of South America.

Creature Of The Month-The Cape Elephant Shrew

The Cape Elephant Shrew was listed as a vulnerable species in 2003. This particular species of elephant shrew is endemic to South Africa. It is also known as the Cape Rock Elephant Shrew.
These creatures stay well hidden, and it is very rare to see a Cape Elephant Shrew.
Elephant shrews came about their name due to their long prehensile noses. They were said to resemble that of an elephant's trunk.
This species is not in fact a shrew, which is why they are also known as the Cape Elephant Sengi. The term sengi is from the Bantu language of Africa.

Usain Bolt: Winner 2009 - Laureus World Sportsman of the Year & delwynunderground undisputed sports stars of 2009

Usain Bolt followed his wonderful Olympic year with an equally spectacular 2009. At the World Championships in Berlin in August, Bolt won 100 metres, 200 metres and 4x100 metres relay gold medals, just as he had done in Beijing 12 months earlier. It meant he became the first man in history to hold the 100 and 200 metres world and Olympic titles at the same time.

In the 100 metres, Bolt improved his world record with a time of 9.58 secs, taking over a tenth of a second off the previous record, the biggest ever margin of improvement since the introduction of electronic timing. He also won the 200 metres gold medal in a new world record time of 19.19 secs, breaking his own record by 0.11 secs. He was also a member of the Jamaican team which won the 4x100 metres relay gold medal. He was voted IAAF World Athlete of the Year for the second straight time in 2009.
At 1.96 metres (6 ft 5 ins) tall, he physically stands out amongst many of his peers and his achievements in sprinting have earned him the media nickname ‘Lightning Bolt’.
In Beijing in August 2008, Bolt had become the first man in history to win the 100 metres (9.69 secs), 200 metres (19.30 secs) and 4x100 metres relay gold medals (37.10secs) in world record times in the same Olympiad, and earn him the title of ‘fastest man on Earth’. Bolt’s 200 metres time broke the long-standing record of 19.32secs set by Michael Johnson in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Bolt became the first man to win three sprinting events at a single Olympics since Carl Lewis in 1984 and the first man to set world records in all three at a single Olympics
After an early career affected by injuries and accidents, Bolt, encouraged by coach Glen Mills, eventually made his breakthrough in 2007, winning the silver medal in the 200 metres in the World Championship in Osaka.
Usain Bolt won the 2009 Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award after his performance in the Beijing Olympics.

Gadget Of The Month

Panasonic RISAIKURA MS-N53 Indoor Composter

Recycling is one of the key aspects to help the earth stay greener. What about your own home recycler. Yes, this gadget will turn your organic garbage like the food scraps into composts using its platinum-palladium catalyst. If you run it 3 hours, it will create composts ideal for fertilizing the plants and vegetables. Running it longer for six hours will ensure that the compost is further broken down which may be suitable for long term fertilization for trees.
